Essesntials   Calories  Carbohydrates  Proteins  Fats  Vitamins & Minerals  Fluids Calories = Energy

Calories tell you how much energy is stored in a food. When you eat, you give your body calories (energy) to burn. We burn more calories running than sitting because it takes more energy to run than to sit.
Burn Calories Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats
all give you calories to burn.

Some nutrients have more calories than others. For example:

1 gram of carbohydrate has 4 calories
1 gram of protein has 4 calories
1 gram of fat has 9 calories

Note that fats have more than twice the number of calories as the same amounts of carbohydrates and proteins. This is why fats can be fattening if you don't burn them off.

It is recommended that you be very active so that your body will burn as many calories as possible. The more calories you burn, the more calories you can eat. As long as you choose healthy foods from the Food Guide Pyramid, you will be able to give your body all of the nutrients it needs to be healthy. People who are not active tend to eat fewer calories. This makes it more difficult to get all the nutrients they need to be healthy.

In general, nutritionists and health organizations recommend a healthy diet of: at least 55% carbohydrate no more than 15% fat & approximately 30% protein. PieChart
