Thawing a turkey
Defrost a frozen turkey in the refrigerator, in its original wrapping. Place turkey on a tray and allow 1 day defrosting time for every 5 lbs. of weight. (Remember not to count the day you will be roasting it.) Placing the turkey on a tray will catch any juices that may drip and prevent contamination of other foods.
Never defrost a turkey at room temperature.
You can also place the plastic wrapped turkey, breast side down, in a sink of cold water. Change the water every 30 minutes to speed thawing.
A thawed turkey should be cooked within 2 days.
