James deals with a love affair in the wealthy class of late 19th-Century New York City. I read this as a class assignment looking for the possibility that James's narrative style reflects the issues he wanted to express in his text. All the characters seem hindered by their society and the expectations placed upon them. I rarely felt sympathy for the characters because James's portrayal doesn't leave much to like, and they all make choices that leave them profoundly sad.
