Four children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, find themselves magically transported to Narnia, a world where animals talk and good battles evil. When the children arrive, the evil White Which has cursed the land with perpetual winter -- without any Christmas. The children meet Aslan, the Lion deity of Narnia, and join him in the battle against the White Witch.
Through overuse and misapplication, the term classic has lost some of its depth, but The Chronicles of Narnia belong with Tolkien's works as classics of the fantasy genre. In this volume, Lewis establishes Aslan as an allegory for Christ and the crucifixion. Lewis writes with a simple, easy-to-read style that adds to the charm of the world he describes. And yet, you can see the depth of Lewis's personal Christian philosophy without even looking hard.
Interestingly, the cover art for the paperback editions features the villains and dark scenes while the cover art for the hardcover editions features the main characters and bright, colorful scenes. Which explains my choice to display the hardcover art on these pages.
