Edmund and Lucy return to Narnia accompanied by their annoying cousin Eustace. The children appear in the ocean near King Caspian's ship. Caspian has vowed to find seven good lords banished during the reign of his evil Uncle.

Lewis continues his Christian allegory with examinations of greed, honor, and free choice. For example, Eustace learns that kindness serves him better than cruelty through a series of hardships culminating with him turning into a dragon.
