An ape, Shift, and a donkey, Puzzle, find a lion skin. The ape dresses the donkey up in the skin and passes the donkey off as Aslan. The ape makes a bargain with Narnia's enemy the Calormen, who capture the Narnian King. The King calls on Aslan to send help, and Aslan sends Eustace and Jill.
In The Last Battle, Lewis pulls almost all the stops and only narrowly couches his Christian allegory in his story. The denouement occurs with about one third of the text remaining. In this remainder, Lewis explores the Narnian afterlife.
Although an interesting conclusion to the Chronicles, this volume in no way stands on its own.
