Meg Murry feels out of place in her family. Her parents are research scientists; her five-year-old brother, Charles Wallace, has the vocabulary of a college graduate; and her twin brothers, Sandy and Dennis, are just regular kids. Meg, on the other hand, has a hard time with school and making friends. She also misses her father, who left for an experiement in interdimentional travel more than a year earlier.
One stormy night, the Murry's get a visit from a mysterious old woman, Mrs. Who. Mrs. Who and her two companions, Mrs. What and Mrs. Which, take Meg, Charles, and Meg's friend Calvin, on an hazadarous journey to help recover Mr. Murray from the forces of evil.
L'Engle creates a universe where the forces of good and evil have visible components. Through her characters, she examines the choices people make to align themselves with these forces and the tools humans have to combat evil. Unlike much of the fiction produced today, A Wrinkle in Time acknowledges the spiritual side of humanity and our innate ability to know good from evil.
