If you have any serious aspirations about tying knots, then you must purchase The Ashley Book of Knots. You need this book for many reasons. For one, Ashley has included every knot ever conceived. As an initial proof that you have created a new knot, you will have to demonstrate that Ashley does not list your knot. Also, many expert knotters will refer you to the Ashley number when discussing knots.

Although Ashley does contain the ultimate compendium of knots, you may want to start out with a more basic book on knot tying. Ashley provides hand drawn instructions that can get a little confusing and complete (though a little cryptic) descriptions of all his knots. Beginners may want to start with a more basic book like, Des Pawson's The Handbook of Knots.
