As the title Day of Reckoning suggests, someone must pay for past misdeeds. In this case, Iris's father, Lord Irine, and the Fayon city elders made some sort of pact that required the banishment of Iris's first daughter, Sara. Sara now returns as an agent of the gods to destroy Fayon, and she gets a pretty good start before Lord Irine uses magic to repel Sara's attacks. Lord Irine commands Iris to flee, but she sees her father's peril and starts to make her way back to the city.
When things look blackest for the city of Fayon, we jump to a new story arc. Several agents from the guild of assassins make an assault on a mysterious castle. Legend tells that the castle has a portal to some demonic realm, and the owner has started the rituals (involving human sacrifices) to open that portal. For some reason, the assassins seem to want to stop the rituals, but we don't have any real clarification about their motivation as of yet, and we end this volume in mid-battle.
This second volume has much better scene to scene continuity than the first volume, but I still have some problems with the presentation. We have no explanation for the guild's attack. It appears that Lee wants to draw us into the story with swift action, saving explanations for later, maybe much, much later.
