The Joy Luck Club examines the lives of eight women: four mothers and their daughters. Each mother went through harrowing experiences to come to the United States from pre-Communist China. And even though the daughters only know fragments of their mothers' stories, these events define major aspects of their personalities and their relationships with their mothers and others.
To try to summarize any of the plots or subplots would not do justice to the excellent craftsmanship that enables the story line to jump frequently from present to past without a hitch or misunderstanding.
Although The Joy Luck Cluk tells stories about Chinese and Chinese Americans, anyone can appreciate the stories because they show how the lives of parents can invisibly and tangibly affect the personalities of their children, in spite of the children's belief in their own independence.
