Bob Rueland (David Duchovny) loses his wife in a fatal car accident. Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver), about to die from heart disease, receives Bob's wife's heart as a transplant.

One year later, Bob decides that he has mourned his wife enough and accepts an invitation from his friend Charlie (David Alan Grier). They meet an Italian restaurant owned by Marty O'Reilly (Carroll O'Connor), Grace's grandfather. Grace waits on Bob's party, and it's love at first sight. Some light comedy ensues, but not enought to really classify Return to Me as a romantic comedy. (Although that's how MGM billed it.)

Grace puts off telling Bob about her transplant and hides her surgery scars. While at Bob's apartment, she finds the letter she sent to the donor family thanking them for her new heart. She gains the courage to tell Bob, and it appears the relationship must end. Grace travels to Italy to paint and wait -- will Bob come after her?

Return to Me doesn't contain any Oscar-winning performances, but leaves you happy. Duchovny does a good job not bringing any of Fox Mulder into the role, and the rest of the cast do a good job at creating a warm family feeling around grace.
